School board member accused of distributing drugs

A 30-year-old man from Mansfield, Louisiana, has been charged with more than a dozen counts of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. According to reports, the drug charges stem from sales the man allegedly made between Oct. 11 and July 12. He was recently required to appear for arraignment in the U.S. District Court in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The 30-year-old is a member of the DeSoto Parish School Board. He also holds a position on the Louisiana School Board Association.

Police took the man into custody on Aug. 22-the Federal Bureau of Investigation was the agency that brought him into custody. He was taken in on one count of distribution of cocaine. The criminal complaint alleges that the 30-year-old sold 3.9 grams of powdered cocaine to a confidential informant on Feb. 7. That informant was reportedly working for federal and parish task force agents at the time.

The arrest affidavit says that the 30-year-old received the cocaine at his place of business and then met with the purchaser at a laundromat in Mansfield. The drugs were reportedly delivered to the informant at that location.

However, this only accounts for one of the charges made against the man. The remaining 13 counts were not detailed in the man's indictment, which came on Sept. 4.

The school board member spent a single night in jail. After that night, he was freed on a $50,000 unsecured bond, but a judge set conditions for the man's release: He is only allowed to travel within Caddo and DeSoto parishes, unless the court provides its approval of travel outside of those boundaries. In addition, he must submit to random drug screening tests issued by the federal probation office. Despite his arrest, the 30-year-old was present at a school board meeting earlier this month and is allowed to retain his post until he resigns or is convicted.
