School board member accused of distributing drugs

A 30-year-old man from Mansfield, Louisiana, has been charged with more than a dozen counts of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. According to reports, the drug charges stem from sales the man allegedly made between Oct. 11 and July 12. He was recently required to appear for arraignment in the U.S. District Court in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Medicare fraud scheme puts Louisiana woman, others behind bars

A recent report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation indicates that a 47-year-old woman from Louisiana will be placed in prison. She has been accused of Medicare fraud and was sentenced earlier this month after pleading guilty to a single conspiracy to commit fraud charge in January. Although there was no indication the defendant sought the services of a criminal defense attorney in this case, in cases involving criminal charges of any kind, a defendant would be wise to do so before pleading guilty.

Police change policy, more arrests likely

Jails in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, may become a little tighter in the time to come. According to reports, the Baton Rouge Police Department is changing its policies and will begin arresting more individuals in lieu of simply giving them a ticket. The change is effective immediately and tickets, also known as misdemeanor summonses, may be handed out on fewer occasions.

Hurricane forces many to evacuate, including sex offenders

Some individuals who have been convicted of crimes in Louisiana will have to jump one more hurdle before evacuating to avoid the effects of Hurricane Isaac. If found guilty of a sex crime and required to register on the sex offenders registry, any evacuating resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will have to report the move to a law enforcement agency. According to authorities, it is a state-mandated requirement that any sex offender report any change in residence.
